Your CITB & CSCS Questions, Answered

Comprehensive Information and Frequently Asked Questions About CITB and CSCS Tests, Requirements, and Guidance.

General Definitions

What do the abbreviations CITB, CSCS, and HVACR mean?

CITB stands for Construction Industry Training Board. It is an organisation responsible for training and qualifications in the construction industry.

CSCS means Construction Skills Certification Scheme. This scheme issues cards to prove workers have the right skills and training to work safely on construction sites.

HVACR stands for Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. It refers to the systems that control heating and cooling in buildings.

CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test

What is the CITB Health and Safety Environment Test?

If you want to get a CSCS card to work on construction sites, you need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. This test is sometimes called the CSCS test or HS&E test. It lasts 45 minutes and is taken on a touchscreen computer. The test contains multiple-choice questions about health, safety, and environmental issues related to construction work. After finishing the test, you will immediately know if you passed or failed.

What topics are covered in the CITB test?

There are different versions of the CITB test depending on your trade or job role. These include:

● Operative test (for general construction workers)

● Supervisory Test

● Demolition Test

● Lifts and Escalators Test

● Highway work Test

● Specialist Working at Height Test

● Tunnelling Test

● Plumbing Test (JIB)

● Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) Test

Is the CITB test hard?

The test checks your knowledge of health and safety rules related to your trade in construction. If you study the revision materials carefully, you should be able to pass. Preparation is important because questions focus on safety procedures and practical knowledge.

How should I prepare for the CITB test?

The best way to prepare is to study the “Health, Safety and Environment” revision book for your trade or role. This book is also available on DVD, which allows you to do practice tests on your computer. The DVD is especially useful if you are taking the test in a foreign language because it includes voice-over practice. You can order these materials by contacting us.

What is the minimum age to take the CITB test?

You must be at least 16 years old.

What about the HVACR Ductwork Test?

This specific test has 46 questions, and you must answer at least 39 correctly to pass. It also lasts 45 minutes.

Languages and Accessibility

Can I take the CITB test in a language other than English?

Yes. The test is offered in several languages through voice-over. You can choose from the following:

● Bulgarian ● Czech ● English ● French ● German ● Hungarian ● Lithuanian ● Polish ● Portuguese ● Punjabi ● Romanian ● Russian ● Spanish ● Welsh

Can I get extra help if I have reading or learning difficulties?

Yes. If you have dyslexia or similar challenges, you can request a “voice-over” version of the test where questions are read aloud to you. This option is available when booking online or by contacting us.

What if I have a medical condition that stops me from wearing a mask?

Contact the organisers before your appointment. They will arrange for you to take the test in an isolated room and discuss any other special needs.

You will need to print, fill out, and sign this form. The form also requires a signature from an authorised person. If you need the waiver form or help with it, contact us for assistance.

CSCS Cards and Qualifications

How do I order my CSCS card?

There are different types of CSCS cards depending on your trade and qualifications. You can find clear steps on how to apply on the official website or contact us for advice.

How long does it take to receive my CSCS card?

Once you finish your required tests and courses, processing your card usually takes 5 to 10 working days.

Can I work if my CSCS card has expired or hasn’t arrived yet?

Most managers will allow you to continue working if you show proof that you have booked your CITB test and are renewing your card. You will get email confirmation after booking which can serve as evidence.

Do I need a course for a Labourers CSCS card?

Yes, besides passing the Health and Safety Environment test, you must complete a Health and Safety Awareness course.

What qualifications do I need for other CSCS cards?

● Blue Skilled Worker Card: Requires NVQ Level 2 qualification related to construction.

● Black Managers Card: Requires NVQ/SVQ Level 4 to 7 plus passing a Managers & Professionals CITB test.

Courses

What is the difference between the Health and Safety Awareness courses?

To get a Labourer’s CSCS card, you need this course which is available in two formats:

1). 3-hour online course: You complete this at home using a computer with a webcam.

2). One-day in-person course: Held at a test centre with an instructor in a group setting.

Both require passing a short final test with usually 100% pass rate.
